i compiled a list of all the parts i would need for a turbo and it came out to 2500 for good parts. this is minus the piping/install..but the whole set up comes out to about 3600 installed. the possibilities with a turbo are endless, and if you are worried about reliability, dont boost too high.

when the supercharger first came out, everyone was bragging about how reliable the sc was and the ease of maintainence, after hearing everyone's problems over the years, it seems the supercharger isnt maintenance free as advertised and everyone thought it would be. now everyone here is spending 1-3k to get only 10-30 more whp from their superchargers...i mean, COME ON, is it really worth it?? i guess now that everyone knows how the supercharger works inside and out and all the kinks to it, would u buy a supercharger again? or would u have spent that money on a turbo?

on a side note, i used to love the supercharger, but after stumbling on this board after it was relased i hated it. i got flamed left and right for supporting turbo and na. i hated how you guys thought the supercharger was the best thing in the world and how you guys would NOT acknoledge how great a good turbo set up or NA motor could be. the times have changed and i hope you guys arent as ignorant as you used to be.

oh...sorry im not posting this to start any flames warz, but me wanting to know if you would go with a turbo or sc if u could do it all over again with all the knowledge you possess.

52 horsepower from 5.5psi, full boost at under 3krpm! And yes, I?m JRSC?ed. Have it 1 year without ANY engine problems.

some track kills: Porsche 911 Carrera (250hp), Porsche Boxter, Lancia Delta Integrale HGP Turbo, Corrado G60 with 14 psi boost, Audi S3

some street kills: AMG Mercedes SLK 230 Kompressor, new BMW 330i, Honda S2000

I think when you install a turbo @ 5.5psi your gains will be 10-15hp more than with SC. For sure a bitch to tune, but it would be the same with turbo.

I had a JRSC on my little D16 and drove the piss out of it everyday without any problems with the blower or engine.

I now have a B16 and will be putting a JRSC on it down the road biggrin

If I had to do it all over I would still go jrsc....don't get me wrong....I like the turbo too....but for a daily driver car like mine...it worked pretty well...it was really very little maintenance at 6lbs...its just a little pain in the butt when going to 9lbs...but its nothing that can't be tuned.

I like my JRSC. Yea I invested alot more than I thought I should, but I have had no problems what so ever.

I started at 8psi, I don't even own a 6 psi pulley. So I think putting a SC on a 2001 ITR with 80 miles on it cost me a little more money than it would have.

I'm very happy with it biggrin

My response to your question is "why wait for boost when you can have it NOW"?

Boost is boost. Both turbo and SC have there +'s and -'s. The both have huge HP potential. You know that. You should also know that with BOTH a turbo or a SC, the fundamental question is:
How fast can you afford to go?

I guarantee that by the time you get your turbo running right, with all the right equipment (J&S, injectors, fuel system upgrades, etc.) you are going to spend the same amount of money that anyone with a decent SC car has.

I would like to see your "List" of Turbo parts that make up your $2500.00 pile... and then how you reach the $3600 install price.

I agree, there are benefits of both Turbo and Supercharged powerplants... and saying one is better than the other simply comes down to what your personal needs/preferences are.

You seem a bit jaded about the power that some people have recieved from adding a JRSC... most get significant gains. Some have problems... and you have seen most of these problems discussed here. Now, if you think that NOBODY has difficulties in tuning a turbo car... you are kidding yourself. Since this is a predominantly JRSC board, the frequency in which you see troubled Superchargers as compared to Turbos will be higher.

And just so you see a "GOOD" example of what a JRSC can do... here is my story.

My '93 Civic Si with a STOCK GSR hybrid swap was good for 13.94 @ 99.60 mph. At this time, with I/H/E, I was putting down 155 HP to the wheels.

I then bolted on a JRSC with the 8 psi pulley, 320cc injectors, a Cartech 20005, STR fuel rail and Iridium plugs. The car now runs 12.60's in the 110 mph range. Although I have not dynoed the car in its present form, the typical HP calculator would put my readings at 245-257 HP to the ground. Erring on the conservative side, lets say 245... this means that for about $3200, I added 89 HP to the wheels and dropped nearly 1.3 seconds off my 1/4 mile times.

    I believe this is a bargain !!!

    John (swiftgsr),
depending on what you goal is. If your goal is POWER and speed, I'd definately go with turbo. If you are like me, and just want a reliable car with very little maintenance (SC belt change is required by it's simple..I can change it in about 20 mins or less now), more instant low end torque. The installation of turbo would probably more involved though with all the intercooling, pipings, oil lines etc. than SC. If you want more power, you *will* have to crank up the boost on your turbo which will put a lot more stress on your engine. A turbo w/ 6 psi will not necessarily make more hp (or that much more) than a supercharged 6 psi. I will not do anymore than 8 psi on the SC though to keep it in the max reliability zone. With a turbo, you will also have turbo lag which is not very good for daily city commuting to work etc...as w/ jrsc, you won't have this problem is it's a GREAT daily driver. I know a lot of people w/ turbo integra making 300-400 wheel hps...but guess what boost they are running? from 17 to 21 psi!!! While the fly down Westheimer, they'll also be saving for a rebuild in the near future.

But that WAS my situation 2 years ago..now, since I graduated and have a real job..i have more $$$ to spend...I'm planning on getting a second car so this will probably be a "fun" car for me from now on..No more commuting to work with it...if it blows oh welll who gives a crap.. so if I were to put something in it, I'd probably go turbo now. I'd put a drag 3 or 4 (whenever it comes out) and a Hondata w/ 440cc injectors...

Or I can just keep it SC and put a Hondata and injectors as is..I didn't invest too much in the car right now..only stock jrsc, jr btc and a GSS432 fuel pump...so if I decide to put the hondata in, the pump and btc must go...that would be the only waste biggrin

    Red face

actually, I'm in the process of planning out my Forced Induction project for my Del Sol B16A3 project right now. I still have my 94 Honda Civic Ex Coupe D16Z w/Greddy Turbo. But, I'm currently leaning towards a supercharger. IMHO, if you are planning a building a reliable, streetable car running 8-9psi either SC or Turbo will end up costing you about the same give or take $500. But, that's not much considering how much you're gonna spend over all. And so far, after doing some research and through past experience, you'll probably end up getting the same "necessary accessories" to keep your car safe whether you go SC or Turbo. Also, if you wanna boost more than 8-9psi you're again probably gonna spend about the same amount of money on building the bottom end, fuel system, head, etc. to accomodate and make the most of the new found boost. The only time I would consider a turbo more beneficial to a roots-type SC is when you wanna go COMPLETELY crazy and boost astronomical figures past 15psi. But, then once you're boosting that high, it'd be very difficult to get anything streetable. Of course this is only comparing turbos to roots-type superchargers. If you compare them with centrifugal type SC's then you're looking at something very similar to turbo's in nature. But, that's just my opinion. I'm sure there's someone out there who knows more than I do that will disagree with me...
